Why I’ve Been Silent For So Long

I’m the guy behind these 3 that’s wheezing on the side of the path

I realize it’s been about a year since I started writing again. I wish I could say that I’ve been writing a novel nonstop and it’s about to release, but that’s not actually the case. I’ll probably get to the novel I’m writing, but it’s not something that’s been taking up my time.

Instead, something else has been consuming my time lately. And it hasn’t been fun.

A year and some months ago, my kidneys collapsed and put me into the hospital. Since then, I’ve been on dialysis for three days a week, and only recently have I worked my way up to being able to do home dialysis (which means every night rather than three times during the day).

And I’m not kidding when I say I worked my way up to it. First, I had to change my eating habits completely. Like really completely. A lot of things I used to enjoy, like sourdough bread, ice cream and macaroni and cheese — gone. And I followed the recommended regiment religiously. I lost about 70 pounds.

One of the nice things is that some of the things I lost, like cheese, got added back to my plate because of some of the sacrifices I did a year or so ago, so that’s always nice. But wow, the sacrifices to get there sucked. A lot.

One of the other problems I came across was the loss of a good part of my index finger. You wouldn’t think that would be a bad…
