Okay, I understand it. It’s always popular to demonize the other side. It’s even beneficial to treat your opponents as archenemies. I get it.

Years ago, I remember working at a place where one of my fellow employees always found a moment where he would say something to the effect of: “That f-in Carter. He totally screwed up our country. Thank God Bush is in office now!” It’s also kind of important to point out what was going on in the world right about that time.

For about forty years, we grew up and lived day to day under the auspices of the Cold War, constantly being told that nuclear war could (and probably would) happen any day. We had drills where we dived under wooden desks that were somehow going to protect us from a nuclear blast, even though all of us were smart enough to know that if one of those bombs hit, we were done. And then overnight, the Cold War was over. People kept saying that somehow we won, but the bombs were still in their silos, and the only difference was that we weren’t expecting an imminent attack, although quite logicially, one could happen nonetheless.

But what really struck me about my colleague was that he held such hatred for a president, even though we had gone through two presidents since him. And that’s what I want to talk about.
