Something Bad is Happening and WE must stop it!
I am thinking of going off half-cocked over an issue that is really not an issue, but as a typical American, I am required to blow it completely out of proportion. I figure I’ll go all Karen before our elected politicians inevitably do so themselves.
Some background.
Capcom is a computer gaming company that develops fighting games on the computer. They have been making them for years. If you’ve ever heard of Resident Evil or Street Fighter, that’s Capcom. Well, some players have been using mods. Mods, for simplicity, allows you to change the content of a game in a myriad of ways. And that’s kind of the problem.
One of the characters in Street Fighter is a female martial artist named Chun Li. And this game has been made since computer games have been made, since games used to look like little people fighting each other until the game has evolved to today with high end graphics of two people actually fighting each other.
But people being people, mods are made that essentially remove Chun Li’s clothing, making her naked. In other words, gamers revert to the stereotypical six year old who laughs at fart jokes.
But making female martial artists become naked has been a part of computer gaming culture almost since the beginning. But what also has been a part of gaming culture is the inevitable backlash from religious organizations that feel it is important to point out how horrible such mods are to the American public. They will then go on the news and exclaim their outrage that such things are happening. As usual, they will claim the software company is responsible and demand justice against this evil company. And some of them will make lucrative careers for themselves by being outraged at this.
And then the cycle will repeat itself, as it always does.
However, Capcom has attempted to circumvent this cycle by announcing that all mods are malicious mods designed to cheat in the game. So even though the problem isn’t caused by Capcom, Capcom is attempting to change the stream of outrage by declaring mods to be cheating, so from that point forward, mods that change Chun Li into a naked Chun Li are actually mods that cheat in the game. Therefore, they are banned.
Personally, I think they’re taking it a step too far, but I kind of understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. Often, the complainers will complain so hard that Congress gets involved and holds a hearing. Really. If I was a software company and wanted to avoid a bunch of Karens demanding Congress stop little boys from seeing Chun Li naked, well, this seems like an excellent way of pushing the blame back at the people responsible.
Now, personally, I’ve never seen Chun Li naked. I make it a policy to not see a woman naked until she’s met my parents first. But I get it that it’s a priority for some game players.
Let’s just face it. No matter what you do, no matter what you enjoy, people are going to be outraged and complain. And not want you to do that thing. Because they don’t like it.
But the one thing you’ll always get from me is a complete dedication to the concept of not caring one way or the other.
