Quite often, the people closest to us make for the worst readers of our own work. Over the years, I've recommended by books to acquaintances, and almost always, they never read them. When my writing has gained some bit of notoriety, I've had people close to me say stuff like: "Hmm, maybe I should read that, if I ever find the time." And they never do.

But the people who do read my stuff, if they like it, they read all of my stuff. I've sort of given up on trying to attract readers of people who seem to treat it as a chore or a favor to read my stuff. Instead, I just chalk it up to "your loss" and go on with my life.
