Part of the problem is that people tend to read stories from their own perspective, constantly filling in words that weren't said due to the voice in their head when they're reading. I've seen a lot of articles written by women who went through horrific experiences that get responded to by guys who don't focus on the events being discussed by the writer, but begin to believe the woman is negative towards all men because her experiences with the men in her article were all negative.
People, these days, have become so reactive to what they read and experience that they sometimes don't take a second to think about what they're reading from the mindset of the person who wrote it, which often forces an argumentative filter to a conversational topic.
