Let the good times last

I’m a college teacher, and one of the things that has become a norm for college students is that they have no idea what’s going on in their own country (and don’t get me started on what’s going on in the rest of the world). And I’ve done a couple of experiments by asking random people (not college students) about current events, and the reaction has shown me similar results. Now, keeping in mind that I live in Southeastern Texas, that may just be a snapshot of that local jurisdiction, but I watch a lot of online videos where they interview people all across the country, and I get the exact same observations (which could also be selection bias, but let’s just hope that’s really the case, otherwise, our country knows nothing about what’s going on around it).

One theory for why this lack of knowledge during a presidential election period may be going on is that we’re not close enough to the election before people start paying attention. This may be why polls are always so off from when pollsters start taking them. They may only be useful weeks before the actual election because that’s when people start paying attention to national news. And with television becoming almost useless when it comes to getting out the message, who knows where people are getting their good information (or any information at all)? This is why the amount of disinformation on social constructs like Facebook make such an impact…
