Most people in the US don't perceive the US being in trouble because they generally don't care. For way too many people, whichever side ends up in control, with whatever new rules they institute, the common person feels he or she really has no say in anything as it is, so they're basically going to sit back and let it happen without really making much of a fuss. The institutions of democracy have been eroded over the years in compliance with our corporate overlords who have been taking more and more control while doing it under the banner of democracy without actually doing anything democratic. The biggest danger the US has had over the last half century has been apathy, and that apathetic behavior has reached a point that we're generally not capable of recovering from. All Trump and right-wing actors who try to erode voting rights have done is show how quicker we can be moved into a direction we've been heading for decades now.
