I'm one of those guys that opens the door for people all the time, regardless of gender. The only reason I mention this is that today I noticed something different (long before reading this article). I work on a college campus, and I opened the door for three students who were walking towards me.
EACH person (2 women and one guy) grabbed the door, even though it was being held open as far as possible, almost as if they didn't trust me to keep the door opened for them. I'm a professor not known for shoving the door closed on people, so it just seemed odd that they all reached for that door, one after another, which told me that what I was experiencing was a sign of the next generation probably not used to having the door opened for them, so they immediately responded as if they were in danger.
I find it kind of odd, but it explains why chivalry is tapering off. People just don't expect it any more, so why would people continue to use it as a gesture going forward?
